Practical Intel

Know Before You Go

01
Traditional onsen etiquette is strictly enforced

Onsens are strictly bathing-only zones where swimwear is prohibited. Shower thoroughly with soap before stepping into the pools, keep towels out of the water, and cover large tattoos if staying at public baths.

02
Ryokan bookings close early

Because traditional ryokans serve elaborate kaiseki dinners prepared fresh daily, check-in cutoff times are typically strictly set at 17:00 or 18:00. Arriving late can forfeit dinner without refunds.

03
Reserve your Shinkansen luggage spaces

JR lines enforce strict rules for large bags on bullet trains. If your suitcase exceeds 160cm in combined dimensions, you must reserve a specific rear-seat luggage space when purchasing your Shinkansen ticket.
