Why July

July is the wettest month in the Arenal basin — averaging 19 inches of rainfall — driven by Caribbean trade winds pushing moisture directly into the volcanic mountains from the east. This is the critical distinction between Arenal and everywhere else in Costa Rica: July here is heavier than October, the reverse of the Pacific pattern. The Arenal cone is hidden on most days and the lava field trails are at their most compromised. What July does deliver is the absolute peak of Balsa and Toro River rafting. The rivers are running at maximum volume and Class III-IV conditions are as technical and powerful as they get all year. If you are here for the water, this is the month.

What's possible this month
Raft the Balsa or Toro River at peak July water levels — the most technically powerful Class III-IV rafting conditions of the entire year
Walk to La Fortuna Waterfall at its most dramatic full-volume flow in the wettest month
Join the Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge boat tour as the wetland refuge reaches peak water level and its highest bird concentration
Join a night frog tour as July wet-season amphibian density reaches its annual maximum across the property trails
Conditions
🌞 Warm 79.8°F days💧 High humidity🌅 13hr daylight
Wettest month — volcano not visibleJuly is the heaviest rainfall month at Arenal, not October. The cone will not be visible for the vast majority of the month and trail conditions are significantly compromised. The rafting is world-class and the hot-spring experience is unaffected. Everything else requires honest expectations.
