The Teton Range rises 7,000 feet directly from the valley floor without foothills, and the hiking trails that climb into it deliver elevation gain, wildflower meadows, and views that reward the effort immediately rather than saving it for the summit. Cascade Canyon is the entry point for most visitors โ a flat, glacially carved valley approach that reaches the base of the Cathedral Group before rising to the Teton Crest. The Teton Crest Trail itself is a multi-day route running the length of the range above treeline, through alpine terrain that puts the entirety of Jackson Hole and the Snake River valley below you on clear days.
The hiking season is July through September โ the high passes hold snow into June most years, and the first significant storms arrive in October. July brings the wildflower peak on the high meadows, with arrowleaf balsamroot and Indian paintbrush covering the slopes below the ridgeline. September delivers the finest combination of open trails, cool temperatures, fall color in the aspen groves on the descent, and the complete absence of the crowds that claim Jenny Lake parking by 9am in peak summer. Start every high route hike before 8am โ afternoon thunderstorms are daily in summer and the exposed ridgeline is not where you want to be when they arrive.

Yellowstone alone covers 2.2 million acres. Old Faithful is 56 miles and well over an hour from Lamar Valley. Many visitors try to see everything in a day and see nothing well. Pick a zone โ the Northern Range for wildlife, the Geyser Basins for thermal features, the Tetons for hiking โ and go deep into it rather than driving the entire loop.
Top lodges in Jackson Hole and inside the parks book out in March and April for July and August. Rental cars in Jackson during peak summer are scarce and expensive if left to the last minute. The September shoulder window is easier to book and often delivers better experiences โ but even that fills by June.
Bison, wolves, grizzlies, and elk are most active at sunrise and sunset. Midday in Yellowstone and Grand Teton means animals are resting and out of sight. Plan to be in Lamar Valley or Hayden Valley by 5:30am in summer and stay until the light goes. Midday is for lunch, a nap, and driving between zones.
