Practical Intel

Know Before You Go

01
French Polynesia is highly spread out

The islands span an ocean territory the size of Europe. Inter-island boat lines are scarce between atoll groups; you must book local Air Tahiti flights months in advance to connect between Tahiti, Bora Bora, and remote atolls.

02
Pack reef-safe mineral sunscreen

Chemical sunscreens containing oxybenzone are strictly forbidden in French Polynesia to protect local lagoons from coral bleaching. Buy certified biodegradable mineral sunblock before you land.

03
Local shops close early on weekends

Outside of resort boundaries, local markets, pharmacies, and ferry services run on limited hours on Saturdays and frequently close entirely on Sundays. Plan cash withdrawals and essential errands accordingly.
