The Honest Pitch

French Polynesia offers the ultimate tropical escape, but visiting during the summer wet season of November to April increases humidity to 80% and brings high rainfall averages that can wash out flight schedules. As a highly exclusive destination, luxury lodges and inter-island charters are extremely limited, demanding reservations at least 10 to 12 months in advance for the dry winter window.

JFMAMJJASOND
Stable Trade Winds & Widespread Sunshine

The dry season (May–October) features beautiful, mild days at 78°F and is cooled by dry Southeast trade winds (Mara'amu). Rainfall drops to under 2.5 inches, opening up clear lagoon snorkeling.

Summer Wet Monsoon Humidity Rise

Summer (November–April) shifts the winds from the North, raising humidity to 80% and bringing heavier precipitation that peaks in December at 8.6 inches. Heavy rains can temporarily darken water clarity.

Inter-island flights have strict luggage limits (typically 23kg / 50lbs). Private seaplanes or charters to remote outer atolls may enforce lower limits, so travel with soft-sided duffel bags.

Know Before You Go

The Reality Check

01

French Polynesia is highly spread out

The islands span an ocean territory the size of Europe. Inter-island boat lines are scarce between atoll groups; you must book local Air Tahiti flights months in advance to connect between Tahiti, Bora Bora, and remote atolls.

Pre-Book Inter-Island Flights
02

Pack reef-safe mineral sunscreen

Chemical sunscreens containing oxybenzone are strictly forbidden in French Polynesia to protect local lagoons from coral bleaching. Buy certified biodegradable mineral sunblock before you land.

03

Local shops close early on weekends

Outside of resort boundaries, local markets, pharmacies, and ferry services run on limited hours on Saturdays and frequently close entirely on Sundays. Plan cash withdrawals and essential errands accordingly.
