The Honest Pitch
Kangaroo Island is an exceptional wildlife sanctuary, but its maritime position in the Southern Ocean subjects it to rapid, unpredictable weather swings and strong winds year-round. Winter (June to August) brings cool temperatures averaging 56°F and rainfall that can make walking trails wet and muddy.

Know Before You Go
The Reality Check
01
Avoid driving at dawn, dusk, or night
Kangaroo Island has a huge wildlife population, and kangaroos, wallabies, and koalas frequently cross the highways in large numbers during low-light hours. Collisions are highly common; plan to arrive at your lodge before sunset.
Do Not Drive After Dark
02
Prepare for unsealed gravel roads
While major routes are paved, access roads to western parks, Seal Bay, and luxury lodges are unsealed gravel. Reduce speeds, leave generous braking distances, and be alert for loose stones throwing dust.
Slow Down on Gravel Trails
03
Keep a safe distance from sea lions
Seal Bay lets you walk directly on the beach, but wild sea lions are powerful and fast when defensive. Maintain a strict 10-meter (33-foot) distance from resting animals, and 15 meters from mothers with pups.
