Serengeti, Tanzania

The experiences that define this trip

Watching massive wildebeest herds cross the predator-heavy Mara River, tracking lions and leopards across the open golden savannah, and stargazing under ink-black equatorial skies.

The Honest Pitch

The Serengeti is one of the world's premier wildlife ecosystems, but tracking the migration requires highly strategic lodge positioning, as the herds move hundreds of miles throughout the year. The heavy rain season of April and May can make dirt tracks extremely muddy and wash out low-lying bridges, prompting some luxury camps to close.

Dry Winter Migration Peak

Winter (June–September) is the supreme season in the Serengeti. Daily high temperatures are highly comfortable (~85°F) and rainfall is practically non-existent. Without rain, grass thins and wildebeest congregate for spectacular river crossings.

Calving vs. Crossing Strategies

The park exhibits two peak events: January/February in the south for the calving season, and July/August in the north for the Mara River crossings. Choose your travel dates and lodge positions accordingly.

Know Before You Go

The Reality Check

01

Malaria precautions are recommended year-round

The Serengeti sits in a malaria transmission zone, peaking during the wet summer months (November to April). Consult a travel physician for preventative medication, wear long sleeves during evening drives, and apply insect repellent daily.

02

Migration crossings are unpredictable

Wildebeest can gather on riverbanks for hours or even days before crossing, and sudden alarms can cause them to scatter back into the bush. Patience is required, and game drives can last all day.

Prepare for Long Crossing Watches
03

Park entry fees are charged per 24 hours

Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) charges steep daily conservation and concession entry fees. These are typically billed on your lodge folio or paid via credit card at the entry gates, and are valid for strict 24-hour periods.
