The Honest Pitch

Ecuador's high-altitude cloud forest is one of the world's most biodiverse corridors, but the rainfall is truly massive, exceeding 24 inches a month during the peak wet season from January to April. This can wash out dirt mountain roads and cause landslides that delay transfers.

Colossal Monsoonal Wet Season

The wet season (December–May) is characterized by enormous downpours exceeding 24 inches a month, peaking in March at 31.1 inches. Heavy rain can wash out dirt mountain roads and restrict outdoor canopy walks.

Stable Temperatures & Golden Dry Window

Daily high temperatures are exceptionally stable around 71–72°F year-round. The dry season (June–November) brings lower rainfall and misty, sun-draped mornings that optimize hummingbird viewing.

Because the road into the cloud forest is unpaved, winding, and subject to landslide delays during heavy rain, self-driving is highly discouraged. Always use professional lodge-guided transfers.

The Reality Check

01

Pack high-traction boots for slick clay trails

The volcanic clay soil of the cloud forest is continuously humid and slick. Normal sneakers do not offer enough traction; wear high-quality, waterproof hiking boots with deep tread to prevent slips on muddy forest tracks.

Wear High-Traction Waterproof Boots
02

Prepare for wet-weather photography

The high humidity and constant mist can cause camera condensation and lens fogging. Keep cameras inside water-resistant cases when not shooting, and pack plenty of silica gel packets and lens cloths.

03

Acclimatize in Quito before traveling

The road to the cloud forest starts in high-altitude Quito (9,350 feet) before descending to the reserves (around 3,100 feet). Spend 24 hours in Quito to acclimatize to the thin air before starting active hikes.
