The Honest Pitch

Rwanda's bamboo slopes offer one of the world's most intimate wildlife encounters, but mountain gorilla trekking is physically demanding, requiring climbs up steep, slick mud slopes at altitudes above 8,000 feet. The wet seasons from March to May and November to December regularly bring heavy rain storms that make trails muddy and slippery.

Optimal Winter Dry Season

Winter (June–August) is the supreme season for gorilla trekking. Rainfall drops to under 2.5 inches, offering the most stable trail footing and lower mud levels on steep volcanic slopes.

Severe High-Altitude Cold

Because the park sits at a high altitude (valleys are 7,000ft+, summits are 14,000ft+), daily high temperatures average only 56°F year-round and nights drop to 44°F. Thermal tracking gear is required.

The Reality Check

01

Gorilla permits are strictly timed

Gorilla tracking permits cost $1,500 per person and are valid for a single, specific calendar day. They are non-transferable and must be secured 9 to 12 months in advance alongside lodge vouchers.

Secure Permits 9-12m in Advance
02

Pack certified trail spats or gaiters

The volcanic clay trails are continuously damp and thick with ground mud. Wear high, water-resistant trail spats or gaiters over your boots and trousers to prevent mud, nettles, and ants from entering.

03

Hire a local porter at headquarters

Even if you are fit, hiring a local porter ($20) at Kinigi headquarters supports the local community and is highly recommended. Porters carry backpacks and provide physical balance support on steep, slick clay slopes.
