The Honest Pitch

The Maldives is the ultimate overwater sanctuary, but travel is highly restricted by monsoon patterns, with the wet season from May to November bringing heavy tropical downpours and strong winds that can disrupt boat transfers. Accommodation and seaplane transfers are among the most expensive in the world, requiring bookings 10 to 12 months in advance for the dry winter window of January to April.

Monsoon Dynamics Shape the Comfort Curve

The Maldives weather is split by two monsoons. The dry winter monsoon (January–April) offers 83°F sunshine and near-perfect visibility, while the wet summer monsoon (May–November) increases wind speeds and swells, and triples the average rainfall volume.

Equatorial Temperature Consistency

Because the islands sit directly on the Equator, the air temperature is incredibly stable, fluctuating by only 2°F (highs ~83°F, lows ~80°F) across all twelve months of the year. Wetsuits are never needed.

Know Before You Go

The Reality Check

01

Strict luggage limits apply on all seaplane transfers

The local floatplanes enforce a rigid weight limit of 20kg (44lbs) for checked baggage and 5kg (11lbs) for hand luggage. Excess baggage fees are steep, and overweight bags are frequently delayed and sent on later flights.

Pack Under 20kg (44lbs)
02

Monsoon winds can cause flight groundings

During the wet season (especially May and November), heavy winds and sudden squalls can ground seaplane operations for several hours. Ensure you have ample buffer time before your international flight home.

Prepare for Seaplane Delays
03

Reef-safe sunscreen is legally mandated

Maldivian corals are highly sensitive to chemical bleaching. It is illegal to use standard sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate. Pack only certified mineral-based, reef-safe sunscreen for ocean swimming.
