The Honest Pitch

The Osa Peninsula is not a resort destination that happens to have wildlife. It is a functioning wilderness that happens to have a handful of extraordinary lodges built inside it. The heat is relentless, the humidity is total, and the jungle operates on its own terms regardless of what your itinerary says. Howler monkeys will wake you before 5am. Bullet ants are real. The road to Cabo Matapalo requires a 4x4 and a driver who has done it before. What the Osa delivers in return is the rarest thing in contemporary travel: a place that has not been softened. The dry season from December through April is when the trails are passable and the wildlife is most concentrated. Come with the understanding that the discomfort is part of the experience — it is the price of access to one of the last intact Pacific rainforest ecosystems on Earth.

The Experiences

The experiences that define this trip: Wildlife tracking in Corcovado, surfing the breaks of Cabo Matapalo, and immersive birding.

Dry Season Heat

Even in the dry season (Dec-Apr), the humidity is extremely high. Drink double the water you think you need.

The Green Season

Don't write off the rainy season. May through August offers spectacular surfing, peak humpback whale watching in the Golfo Dulce, and incredible rainforest lushness.

The Reality Check

01

It is completely wild

Lapa Rios is open to the jungle. You will share your space with insects, monkeys, and macaws. It is not a manicured resort experience.

Immersive Nature
02

No air conditioning

To minimize environmental impact, the bungalows at Lapa Rios do not have AC. They rely on ocean breezes and ceiling fans. The nights can be warm.

03

Pack for the mud

Even in the dry season, the jungle can be muddy. The lodge provides rubber boots, but bring clothes you don't mind getting dirty and wet.
