Kangaroo Island has a huge wildlife population, and kangaroos, wallabies, and koalas frequently cross the highways in large numbers during low-light hours. Collisions are highly common; plan to arrive at your lodge before sunset.
While major routes are paved, access roads to western parks, Seal Bay, and luxury lodges are unsealed gravel. Reduce speeds, leave generous braking distances, and be alert for loose stones throwing dust.
Seal Bay lets you walk directly on the beach, but wild sea lions are powerful and fast when defensive. Maintain a strict 10-meter (33-foot) distance from resting animals, and 15 meters from mothers with pups.
