El Limón is a 50-metre waterfall dropping off the limestone ridgeline that runs along the spine of the Samaná Peninsula, reached by a trail through cacao groves and secondary forest that takes about an hour on foot or horseback from the trailhead. The payoff is a plunge pool fed by cold water at the base of the falls, surrounded by jungle on every side, with the sound of the waterfall drowning out everything else. The trail is accessible year-round but the experience peaks between January and March when dry season conditions keep the path firm, the waterfall is running at full force from winter rainfall, and the heat is manageable enough to make the hike genuinely enjoyable rather than an endurance exercise.
By June and July the forest turns a deeper, more intense green as the rains arrive, and the falls run even harder — but the trails get slick and the humidity makes the approach significantly more demanding. September and October are when the jungle is at its most extreme, with heavy runoff closing the lower sections of trail entirely. The reward for timing your visit to the dry season is a hike that feels effortless compared to what the same trail delivers in August.
