Wildist Research Verdict
The whales leave in late March and take the crowds with them. Prices drop, the flat water at Las Galeras opens up, and Mirko's kitchen stays open.

Italian chef Mirko has been cooking here long enough that guests plan return trips around his lobster. You're here for humpback season, Playa Rincón, and a dinner that makes the drive into the village feel unnecessary.

Fly into AZS
Fly into El Catey (AZS). Santo Domingo adds 3.5 hours. The property sits in the La Guázuma hills above Las Galeras on a steep unpaved residential lane. High-clearance vehicle recommended — especially after rain. The address on its own Facebook page is listed as 'Whale Lovers Boulevard.'
Mornings on the terrace, afternoons by boat
Playa Rincón is 20 minutes by boat — have the boatman drop you at the far east end where the river meets the sea. The west end gets vendors by midday; the east end doesn't.
Las Galeras: end of the road
Las Galeras is the quietest village on the peninsula, 25km east of Samaná town at the end of the paved road. The property runs as a home, not a hotel — rescue dogs, parrots, and peacocks on the grounds. Mirko cooks to order; book dinner the night before.
